Cruise Seminars by ITF Maritime Unions

Our dignity and mutual respect policy

The Cruise Seminars are organised by ITF maritime unions. Because we are trade unions, our Cruise Seminars are built on the values of solidarity, dignity and respect.

We expect everyone connected to the Seminars to uphold these values and treat people in the way they would like to be treated, with dignity and respect.

As a group, we will not tolerate behaviour that undermines the dignity or self-esteem of any individual or creates an intimidating, hostile, abusive or offensive environment. This policy is to protect us from any form of harassment, abuse or similarly unacceptable behaviour.

This behaviour may or may not focus on such things as:

- Race, ethnic origin, nationality and skin colour
- Gender and sexual orientation
- Disabilities or sensory impairments
- Age, health, or physical characteristics
- Religious or political beliefs

This policy applies to all aspects of Cruise Seminar activities, including meetings, administrative processes, events and social gatherings, wherever they may take place.

This policy applies to staff, participants, family members, guests, those working at the venues where the Cruise Seminars take place, and anyone else connected with the Cruise Seminars.

This Cruise Seminar Dignity and Mutual Respect Policy will be made available at all Cruise Seminars and events and on the Cruise Seminar website.

What we ask of you

To treat everybody, including Cruise Seminar staff, participants, family members, guests and hotel staff with respect and dignity.
To think before you make personal remarks.
To ensure your own behaviour does not cause offence or misunderstanding.
To challenge any unacceptable or offensive behaviour whenever you see it.

What kind of behaviour is unacceptable?

Unacceptable behaviour includes unwelcome physical, verbal or non-verbal conduct and any behaviour that ridicules, intimidates, or is physically abusive, whether in person or through other channels of media.

Some examples are:

Offensive language insults and obscene gestures
Unwanted physical contact
Comments about someone’s physical appearance.
Physical or sexual assault
Racist, sexist or religious jokes
Sexual propositions
Intrusion by pestering or stalking or unwelcome gifts
Persistent phone calls or other harassing behaviour

These are just examples. If you are not sure, it is best not to do it.

What should you do if you experience or witness unacceptable behaviour?

Cruise Seminar staff, participants, family members, guests and hotel staff are encouraged to report to someone in the team any incident that they feel breaches this policy - this can be anyone from any union. If you do not feel comfortable doing this, you can send an email to mail@nsu.org.

All reported incidents will be treated as confidential investigated by an appropriate person that is independent of the incident, designated by the Cruise Seminar committee.

Please note that we will handle all complaints from hotel staff in the same way.
